Scarcity as a Strategy.
Disruptive Leadership Lessons from Rural Alaska EMS

Tracey Loscar, BA, NRP, Mat-Su Borough EMS

About the Session:
In the remote Matanuska-Susitna Borough of Alaska, scarcity is a strategy. Facing vast distances, limited resources, and an inexperienced Gen Z workforce, leaders adopted a "self-rescue" mindset. This reshaped recruitment and culture, driving advancements in training and clinical performance to ensure consistent care. Learn how to harness scarcity as a driver for innovation and resilience, applying these frontier lessons to EMS systems of any size.

About the Speaker:
Tracey is the Deputy Director of EMS for the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough, a frontier system spanning 25,000 square miles in Southcentral Alaska. A veteran paramedic, she spent more than 25 years in Newark, New Jersey, as a ground medic, educator, and flight medic before relocating north to help build Alaska’s only municipal third-service EMS agency. She is an inaugural recipient of the American Ambulance Association’s EMS Vanguard Award (2023) for her contributions to prehospital healthcare. She is an author, national speaker, and member of the EMS World Editorial Advisory Board.

The presentation will speak to how Wayfound engaged with a large organization who was tasked to provide wildfire support, including coordination of resources and fire suppression, to embed mental health supports throughout the wildfire season. We had mental health professionals who deployed to fire camps to be on the ground with fire suppression personnel, including firefighters, paramedics, engineers, etc., to provide in-the-milieu mental health supports to those who were engaged in frontline work. Suffering in Silence. The Deadly Effect of Stoicism on EMS

Featuring Dr. Carol Anita Cunningham, MD, FAAEM, FAEMS

About the Session:
For the general public, EMS clinicians are often viewed as the super heroes saving lives and are ever present on the worst day of one’s life. This is a true emergency that needs to be urgently addressed in an effective, professional, and compassionate manner.
